Founded as a study collection for the Academy of Fine Arts, it grew on works Napoleon requisitioned from suppressed churches — which is why it is full of great altarpieces. Two adjoining rooms hold Raphael's Marriage of the Virgin, Mantegna's Dead Christ seen from the feet, and Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus.
