Granite obelisks up to thirty-three metres tall, carved to look like multi-storey palaces complete with windows and false doors, planted as markers over the tombs of the kings of Aksum. The largest toppled in antiquity and still lies broken where it fell; another came home from Italy in 2005 after seventy years in Rome. Next door, Ethiopians will tell you, the Ark of the Covenant is kept.
