The prison island in San Francisco Bay, shut down in 1963 and left much as it was: cells nine feet by five, the mess hall, the corridor the inmates called Broadway. The audio tour is narrated by the men who were actually there, guards and prisoners alike, and it's the best thing about the visit. From the dock the city looks close enough to touch โ which was precisely the cruelty of the place.
