The third-largest Roman amphitheatre anywhere rises out of a small town of a few thousand people in the middle of an olive plain, and it is that mismatch of scale that takes your breath. Thirty-five thousand seats, three tiers of arcading almost intact, and — rarely — the underground passages open to visitors, where gladiators and animals waited before the lift to the arena floor.
