The highest waterfall on earth: a 979-metre free fall from the rim of Auyán-tepui, the flat-topped mountain the Pemón call the devil's house. From that height the water frays into mist before it reaches the ground, and in the dry season it sometimes evaporates entirely. Getting there means flying to Canaima, then days by dugout canoe up rivers stained red with tannin.
