New Zealand's highest mountain at 3,724 m, and to the Ngāi Tahu an ancestor rather than a landform. At its foot the Hooker Valley Track runs three hours across swing bridges to a lake with icebergs floating in it, calved off the glacier above. It also sits inside a dark sky reserve: with no artificial light for tens of kilometres, the Milky Way is a dense band to the naked eye.
