In the Beqaa valley the Romans raised the largest temples they ever built: six columns twenty-two metres tall survive from the temple of Jupiter, the tallest of the ancient world. Beside it the temple of Bacchus stands almost intact, better preserved than the Parthenon and twice its size. In the nearby quarry lies a dressed block of a thousand tonnes they never managed to move.
