Two hundred and seventy-two brightly painted steps climb into a limestone hill to a cavern a hundred metres high, with a Hindu shrine to Murugan at the back and daylight falling through the collapsed roof. Outside, a forty-three-metre gilded statue of the god guards the stairway. In January the Thaipusam procession arrives here with over a million people. The macaques will take anything not zipped shut.
