The little red train climbs from chestnut woods to the 2,253-metre Bernina Pass on sheer adhesion, the steepest such railway in Europe. In a few hours it runs past the Morteratsch glacier, the twin Lago Bianco and Lago Nero, then spirals down the open-air Brusio viaduct towards Italy. UNESCO-listed alongside the Albula line.
