A kilometre of sand half an hour from central Sydney, and an institution besides: the world's first volunteer surf lifesaving club was founded here in 1906, and the red-and-yellow flags now seen on every Australian beach were a local invention. At the southern end sits the Icebergs ocean pool, regularly swamped by the swell. The coastal walk to Coogee starts right there.
