The remains of a collapsed volcano — the twin peaks of Mount Otemanu and Pahia — ringed by a lagoon so clear you can count the sandbanks from the plane. This is where the overwater bungalow was invented in the 1960s, and it has been the honeymoon postcard ever since. Beyond the resorts there is a real island, with a road that loops it in thirty-two kilometres.
