On a five-hundred-metre island in the Sierra Leone estuary stand the ruins of the castle the Royal African Company raised around 1670: two watchtowers, the battery with emplacements for eight guns, the powder magazine and the headstones of slave traders buried on the spot. Bunce shipped people above all to the rice plantations of South Carolina and Georgia, bought for the skill they already had. That is why Gullah families from the American coast come back to see it.
