A high-altitude rainforest so dense it earned its name, home to almost half the mountain gorillas left alive. The trek can take one hour or eight, all of it uphill through mud, and it ends with you sitting seven metres from a family that chews leaves and ignores you completely. It is the most intense hour Africa offers, and the permits go months in advance.
