In the middle of Castletown, the old capital, stands one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe: raised by the Norse kings in the 12th century, extended into the 16th, never slighted and never restored away, so floors, fireplaces and ceilings are the originals. Rooms are dressed as they were around 1520, with figures, laid tables and soundscapes, and the one-handed clock on the front — a gift from Elizabeth I in 1597 — still keeps time.
