Switzerland's postcard bridge has crossed the Reuss on a diagonal since 1333, its timber roof lined with 17th-century painted panels telling the city's story. Several boards are still scorched from the 1993 fire and were deliberately left unrestored. The stumpy octagonal Water Tower beside it once held the town archive, the treasury and a prison cell.
