The densest elephant population on earth — fifty thousand, by most counts — gathers along the Chobe river in the dry season. The way to see it is from the water, on a late-afternoon boat, when the herds come down to drink and swim across with their trunks up like periscopes, past hippos and crocodiles that do not bother to move.
