The largest fortress in the Americas, built at nine hundred metres by Henri Christophe after independence to hold off a French return that never came, and to protect the world's first Black republic. The walls reach forty metres and the courtyards still hold a hundred and sixty cannon with their stacked shot. You climb from Milot on foot or by horse, a good hour of it.
