Founded by the Tairona six centuries before Machu Picchu and rediscovered only in 1972 by grave robbers, it is a stairway of 1,200 stone steps climbing through Sierra Nevada jungle to circular terraces overlooking the valley. There is no road: the only way in is a four-day trek through humid forest, fording rivers, guided by people from the indigenous communities who still hold the place sacred.
