The Maya city where stone sculpture reached its peak: stelae carved fully in the round with portraits of the rulers, zoomorphic altars, gods' heads lying among the roots. The Hieroglyphic Stairway carries 63 steps cut with over two thousand glyphs, the longest Maya text ever found. Beneath the visible pyramids stand earlier ones, reached through tunnels the archaeologists dug.
