A hundred and twenty metres below sea level, in the hottest inhabited place on the planet, acid springs push up through the salt and build terraces of yellow, green and orange that look airbrushed on. Geologists use this landscape to picture Mars, and a few hours of track away Erta Ale keeps a permanent lake of lava. You go only with an organised convoy, and never in summer.
