The lowest and hottest place in North America: at Badwater Basin you walk on a salt crust eighty-five metres below sea level. Around it lie sand dunes, hills streaked with mineral colour, and the sailing stones that slide unaided across the dry Racetrack playa. At dawn from Zabriskie Point the badlands look like waves stopped mid-break.
