Built in 1327 by an Andalusian architect paid in gold by the emperor Mansa Musa, it is the heart of the Timbuktu that was West Africa's greatest centre of learning for two centuries. Sand, earth and timber beams: low, broad, with a pyramidal minaret and a courtyard where manuscripts were copied by the thousand. The Sahara caravans set out from its door.
