Thirty-four Buddhist, Hindu and Jain sanctuaries strung along two kilometres of the same basalt cliff, carved side by side while the three faiths shared the valley. The masterpiece is the Kailasa temple: not built but subtracted from a single mass of mountain, top down, courtyards and towers included. Two hundred thousand tonnes of rock removed with chisels.
