At its centre lies a white salt pan the size of a small country, dry for most of the year and visible from space. Around it, a handful of permanent waterholes concentrate everything: in the dry season you park beside one and wait, and within an hour come elephants gone white with dust, oryx, giraffe and the black rhino that are easier to see here than almost anywhere.
