The second-largest canyon on earth after the Grand Canyon: 160 kilometres of meandering gorge, five hundred metres deep, cut into rock nearly two billion years old. From the rim the river is reduced to a string of green pools; anyone with five days and a medical certificate can hike the floor, on one of southern Africa's hardest trails.
