Half the monastery is built and half is hollowed out of the wall of the Azat gorge: you step from a church of dressed stone into a chapel carved entirely from living rock, its columns simply left in place while everything else was cut away. The acoustics are such that Armenian choirs record here. It is named for the spear that tradition says pierced Christ, kept here for centuries.
