A 14th-century stone church alone on a meadow at 2,170 metres, with snow-capped Kazbek behind it: this is the picture people carry in their heads when they think of the Caucasus. It is an hour and a half on foot from Stepantsminda, or a rough four-wheel-drive track. Through centuries of invasion Georgia's treasures were carried up here to be hidden.
