A travertine acropolis on the Brentwood hills, designed by Richard Meier and reached only by an automated tram. Inside hang Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Titian alongside a collection of illuminated manuscripts; outside, Robert Irwin's Central Garden is a work in its own right. Admission is free, and at sunset the whole of Los Angeles unrolls to the ocean.
