Eighty stone stairways drop into the Ganges over six kilometres, and on them the city does everything: bathes, prays, does the laundry, burns its dead. At dawn the boats push out towards a sun rising over the far bank; at dusk, at Dashashwamedh, priests swing tiers of fire in time with the drums. It is among the most intense things India offers, and it is not for everyone.
