Sikhism's holiest shrine floats at the centre of a square pool, sheathed in gold leaf and reached by a marble causeway. It has four doors, one on each side, so that anyone may enter from any direction. The communal kitchen feeds tens of thousands of people free every day, and it may be the most astonishing thing here.
