Two thousand three hundred kilometres of reef off Queensland, the only structure built by living things that is visible from space: nearly three thousand separate reefs and nine hundred islands. Below the surface there are sixteen hundred fish species, green turtles, manta rays and reef sharks. You go in with a mask or tanks from the pontoons off Cairns and Port Douglas, or out of the Whitsundays.
