The largest stone city of pre-colonial sub-Saharan Africa, raised between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries without a drop of mortar: dressed granite blocks dry-laid into walls eleven metres high and five thick. Inside the Great Enclosure stands a conical tower whose purpose nobody has established. Colonial authorities spent decades denying Africans had built it; the country took its name at independence.
