What remains of Vijayanagara, in the 1500s one of the richest cities on earth, scattered across twenty-six square kilometres of round granite boulders and rice paddies. There is the stone chariot of the Vittala temple, the pillars that ring like bells when struck, kilometre-long bazaars and the elephant stables. Rent a bicycle and give it two full days.
