The smallest alpine range on earth: twenty-five kilometres end to end, and inside them twenty peaks above 2,500 metres, glacial lakes, granite walls and chamois. Gerlachovský štít, at 2,655 metres, is the roof of the Carpathians. Štrbské Pleso and Starý Smokovec are the bases, linked by an electric railway, and the trails are waymarked and busy in summer — above the lakes some routes require a certified guide.
