A low hill covered by more than a hundred thousand crosses, from two-metre crucifixes to rosaries hung in clusters, grown over two centuries as an act of defiance: the Soviets bulldozed it three times and each time it reappeared overnight. The wind moving through the rosaries makes a sound you do not forget. John Paul II came here in 1993.
