The British free port of 1786 has stayed a mosaic: Chinese shophouses under continuous arcades, Indian mosques, Taoist clan temples, Anglican churches and colonial villas, all inside the same half square kilometre. Over the last fifteen years the walls have filled with murals and wrought-iron cartoons telling the neighbourhood's own stories. The street food is as good as almost anywhere in Asia.
