For two centuries a third of Europe's silver came out of these hills, and the town left behind is an amphitheatre of Renaissance and Baroque houses wedged into the slopes of a dead volcano. The world's first mining academy was founded here, and the reservoirs its engineers dug to drive the pumps are now swimming lakes. Old Castle and New Castle face each other across the basin, and one mine can be visited on foot, helmet and lamp included.
