The court of thirteen Nguyễn emperors, enclosed by ten kilometres of wall and a moat off the Perfume River. You enter through the Meridian Gate into a sequence of courtyards, lotus ponds and halls on red-and-gold lacquered columns. The battle of 1968 destroyed much of it and restoration has run for decades: between the rebuilt pavilions lie the empty lawns where the Purple Forbidden City stood.
