Khiva's inner town sits entirely inside ten metres of mud-brick wall, entered through four gates just as the desert caravans once were. People still live here, but the rest is an open-air museum: squat banded-tile minarets, palaces with coffered ceilings on carved wooden columns, and one enormous minaret begun and never finished. It is small enough to walk in a day and so compact it barely looks real.
