The shrine stands on stilts over the tideline of Miyajima island, and at high water it appears to float. Its vermilion torii planted in the sea — sixteen metres of camphor wood — is one of Japan's three classic views. At low tide you can walk out to its legs; the island has been held sacred for centuries, and deer wander freely along the red corridors.
