The best-preserved Roman city outside Italy, buried under sand for centuries and only excavated from the 1920s. You pass under Hadrian's Arch, cross the oval plaza ringed with Ionic columns and walk eight hundred metres of paved cardo with the cart ruts still cut into the stone. Two theatres, a nymphaeum and the temple of Artemis complete it.
