Eight thousand six hundred and eleven metres, the world's second mountain and by a distance its hardest — a near-perfect pyramid of rock and ice with no easy line on any face, which kills roughly one climber for every four who summit. No road comes near it. To stand in front of it you walk six days up the Baltoro glacier, between granite spires that look invented, to the amphitheatre of Concordia.
