Twenty-five temples survive out of eighty-five, raised over three centuries by the Chandela kings and then swallowed by jungle until the 1800s. Their walls carry thousands of high-relief figures: gods, musicians, warriors and the famous erotic panels, which in fact occupy only a fraction of the surface. If you have half a day, make it the Western Group and its towering Kandariya Mahadeva.
