The Gobi's 'singing dunes': a hundred and eighty kilometres of sand up to three hundred metres high, whose crest hums and booms when the wind shifts it. A stream at the base keeps a green ribbon alive where camels graze and nomad gers stand. The climb takes half an hour of hard work in soft sand and pays off with desert opening in every direction to the mountains.
