The temple hangs off the Higashiyama hillside on a thirteen-metre scaffold of cypress pillars, joined without nails. From the veranda you look over Kyoto across a sea of maples โ red in November, pink in April. Below, the Otowa waterfall drops in three streams and visitors queue with long ladles to drink from one only: taking all three is said to be greedy.
