The Renaissance fortress guarding the three-kilometre strait between Denmark and Sweden, which for centuries taxed every ship bound for the Baltic. Shakespeare called it Elsinore and set Hamlet here — still performed in the courtyard each summer. Beneath the ramparts lie the casemates and the sleeping statue of Holger the Dane.
