Founded in 1100 at 1,200 metres among the pines of the Troodos, this is the richest and most venerated monastery on the island, keeper of an icon of the Virgin ascribed to St Luke and encased in silver so that nobody may look at it. Cloisters and corridors were sheathed in gold mosaic in the 20th century, and the museum holds manuscripts, vestments and silverwork. Three kilometres away on Throni hill lies Archbishop Makarios, with an honour guard.
