The deepest lake on earth at 1,642 metres, holding a fifth of the planet's unfrozen fresh water. In summer it is an inland sea ringed by taiga mountains; by February it freezes into a transparent metre-thick sheet you can drive across, shot through with turquoise cracks like lightning. It is home to the nerpa, the world's only freshwater seal.
