The sand that buried it for centuries also preserved it, and Leptis Magna is now the best-preserved Roman city on the Mediterranean. The emperor Septimius Severus was born here and rebuilt it in marble: a four-sided triumphal arch, a basilica whose piers are carved with the labours of Hercules, a market with its stone counters still standing, and a theatre facing the open sea.
