The stretch between Guilin and Yangshuo is the landscape every Chinese person carries in their pocket — it is printed on the twenty-yuan note. The river slides green between limestone towers as tall as apartment blocks, past water buffalo and fishermen working cormorants from bamboo rafts. Cruise boats take half a day, but the raft from Xingping, where the peaks crowd the water, is better.
